Consonant Counter

The Consonant Counter is the mirror image of the vowel counter: it counts the letters of the alphabet that are not vowels, and reports the full frequency table for all 21 (or 20, if you treat y as a vowel) consonants. It also shows the consonant/vowel ratio, which is one of the simplest measures of how "hard" or "soft" a text sounds.

Useful for cryptography, word games, linguistics and any analysis that needs letter frequency. The result is computed locally, so private text stays private.

How to use the Consonant Counter

  1. Paste or type the text you want to analyse.
  2. Tick "Y is a vowel" if you want y excluded from the consonant count.
  3. Read the total, the per-letter table and the ratio.
  4. Sort the table by clicking a column header in your head - it is already sorted by count.

About this tool

The Consonant Counter is built for speed and accuracy: every calculation runs in your browser, so your data never leaves your device and the result updates as you type. It works equally well on a phone, a tablet or a desktop, and it is free to use as many times as you like.

Common use cases

  • Letter-frequency analysis for cryptography.
  • Linguistics homework and sound-pattern study.
  • Word games such as Scrabble or Boggle.
  • Checking letter balance in a headline.

Tips for the best result

  • Use the latest figures you have - even a small change in rate or term can shift the outcome by hundreds.
  • For annual figures, divide by 12 to get a monthly number you can compare with the result.
  • Bookmark this page and revisit the calculation as the inputs change.
