Tile Grout Calculator

A bag of grout covers a known volume of joint, and the volume of joint depends on the tile size, the grout width and the total area. The Tile Grout Calculator does the volumetric math: area times the cross-section of one joint, divided by the grout density, with a 10% safety margin for waste and clean-up.

Use it for sanded cement grout, unsanded grout for narrow joints, or epoxy grout for kitchens. The formula works for any of them as long as you enter the correct density and coverage figures from the bag.
Calculator

Formula used

Volume = area × tile_length × tile_width × joint_width × depth

How to use the Tile Grout Calculator

  1. Measure the total area to be tiled.
  2. Note the tile dimensions and the recommended joint width.
  3. Set the joint depth to the tile thickness.
  4. Read the grout needed in kg and pounds, with a 10% waste margin.

About this tool

The Tile Grout Calculator is built for speed and accuracy: every calculation runs in your browser, so your data never leaves your device and the result updates as you type. It works equally well on a phone, a tablet or a desktop, and it is free to use as many times as you like.

Common use cases

  • Ordering grout for a bathroom retile.
  • Comparing sanded vs unsanded coverage.
  • Estimating epoxy grout for a kitchen splashback.
  • Checking that one bag is enough before starting.

Tips for the best result

  • Use the latest figures you have - even a small change in rate or term can shift the outcome by hundreds.
  • For annual figures, divide by 12 to get a monthly number you can compare with the result.
  • Bookmark this page and revisit the calculation as the inputs change.

Frequently asked questions

Sanded or unsanded?

Use unsanded for joints under 1/8 inch and any polished or glass tile. Use sanded for anything wider; it is cheaper and resists cracking.

How deep should the joint be?

The full thickness of the tile. For a 3/8 inch tile, the joint should also be 3/8 inch deep.
