Sales Tax Calculator

The Sales Tax Calculator works in both directions. In "add tax" mode it takes a pre-tax price and returns the tax and the total you pay. In "exclude tax" mode it starts from a receipt total and backs out the tax that is already inside it, so you can see the true net price.

Reverse mode is the one people search for when filing expenses or reconciling invoices, because tax is applied to the net amount - not simply subtracted from the gross. Enter your local rate (state plus county plus city where applicable) and the tool does the rest. For other percentage maths, see the Percentage Calculator.

Formula used

About this tool

  • For annual figures, divide by 12 to get a monthly number you can compare with the result.
  • Bookmark this page and revisit the calculation as the inputs change.

Frequently asked questions

Why is reverse tax not just "total minus rate%"?

Because the tax was calculated on the net price, not on the total. Dividing by (1 + rate) is the correct way to back it out.

Can I use it for VAT or GST?

Yes. Any single-rate consumption tax works the same way - enter the VAT or GST percentage and use the same two modes.
