Text & Writing tool

Plain Text Cleaner

Text harvested from the web is rarely clean. The Plain Text Cleaner removes the noise in one pass: URLs, email addresses, @mentions, hashtags, repeated spaces, tabs, blank lines and non-ASCII characters such as smart quotes and invisible control codes.

Every option is a checkbox, so you can clean exactly what you need and leave the rest. The result is a copy button away. Useful before running text analysis, importing into a spreadsheet, or pasting into a system that only accepts plain ASCII.

About this tool

The Plain Text Cleaner is built for speed and accuracy: every calculation runs in your browser, so your data never leaves your device and the result updates as you type. It works equally well on a phone, a tablet or a desktop, and it is free to use as many times as you like.

Common use cases

  • Cleaning scraped web text before analysis.
  • Preparing text for a system that only accepts ASCII.
  • Removing tracking links from a shared document.
  • Normalising whitespace before a CSV import.

Tips for the best result

  • Use the latest figures you have - even a small change in rate or term can shift the outcome by hundreds.
  • For annual figures, divide by 12 to get a monthly number you can compare with the result.
  • Bookmark this page and revisit the calculation as the inputs change.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting to ASCII lose information?

Yes. Smart quotes and dashes become plain equivalents, and emoji or non-Latin scripts are dropped entirely. Leave the option off if you need to keep them.

Can I remove only URLs?

Yes. Every option is independent, so tick only "Remove URLs" and leave the rest unticked.
