GPA Calculator

The GPA Calculator turns a list of courses into a grade point average on the 4.0 scale. Add a row for each class, enter the credit hours and pick the letter grade, and the tool computes the weighted average, total credits and total grade points as you edit.

Because GPA is weighted by credit hours, a four-credit course moves the average far more than a one-credit lab. That is why the tool multiplies each grade point by the credits rather than simply averaging the grades. Add or remove rows freely to model a whole semester, a full degree, or a "what if I retake this class" scenario.

About this tool

The GPA Calculator is built for speed and accuracy: every calculation runs in your browser, so your data never leaves your device and the result updates as you type. It works equally well on a phone, a tablet or a desktop, and it is free to use as many times as you like.

Common use cases

  • Calculating a semester GPA.
  • Modelling how retaking a course would change your average.
  • Checking what grades are needed for a scholarship.
  • Combining transfer credits into one average.

Tips for the best result

  • Use the latest figures you have - even a small change in rate or term can shift the outcome by hundreds.
  • For annual figures, divide by 12 to get a monthly number you can compare with the result.
  • Bookmark this page and revisit the calculation as the inputs change.

Frequently asked questions

Is the GPA weighted by credits?

Yes. Each grade point is multiplied by the credit hours, so a 4-credit course counts four times as much as a 1-credit course.

Can I use plus and minus grades?

Yes. The scale includes A−, B+, B−, C+, C− and D+ steps of 0.3, matching the common US 4.0 scale.
