Flooring Square Foot Calculator

Flooring is sold by the box, and every box covers a fixed number of square feet. The Flooring Square Foot Calculator multiplies the room length by the width (or sums multiple rectangles for an L-shaped room), adds a waste percentage, then divides by the box coverage to get the number of boxes.

Different materials have different waste factors. Hardwood laid straight is about 8-10%, hardwood on the diagonal is 12-15%, and tile is 10% minimum because of cuts. The tool defaults to 10% but you can change it. The price per box turns the answer into a budget figure you can take to the store.

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I allow?

8-10% for straight plank layouts, 12-15% for diagonal, and 10-15% for tile. Pattern-heavy designs need more.

Do I include closets and alcoves?

Yes, include every area that will be floored. The tool sums whatever length and width you enter.
