Vowel Counter

The Vowel Counter tells you how many vowels are in a passage, which ones dominate, and what share of the letters are vowels. It counts a, e, i, o and u by default, with an option to include y (which behaves as a vowel in words like "happy" and "rhythm").

Useful for linguistics homework, poetry analysis, spelling-bee preparation and simple text statistics. The per-letter table shows the count and percentage for each vowel, and the ratio compares vowels against consonants across the whole text.

  3. Read the total, the per-vowel table and the vowel ratio.
  4. Copy the result if you need it elsewhere.

About this tool

The Vowel Counter is built for speed and accuracy: every calculation runs in your browser, so your data never leaves your device and the result updates as you type. It works equally well on a phone, a tablet or a desktop, and it is free to use as many times as you like.

Common use cases

  • Linguistics and phonetics homework.
  • Poetry and alliteration analysis.

Tips for the best result

  • Use the latest figures you have - even a small change in rate or term can shift the outcome by hundreds.
  • For annual figures, divide by 12 to get a monthly number you can compare with the result.
  • Bookmark this page and revisit the calculation as the inputs change.

Frequently asked questions

Is Y a vowel?

Sometimes. It acts as a vowel in words like "happy" and "rhythm" and as a consonant in "yes". The tool defaults to excluding it; tick the option to include it.

How are accented letters handled?

Accented vowels are normalised to their base letter, so é, è and ê all count as e.
